Although he spun off course and finished 11th Sunday at Infineon Raceway, things are still looking up for Greg Biffle both in the point standings and with his future at Roush Fenway Racing.
Biffle was shooting for his third straight top five finish at the twisting Northern California road circuit but a trip off track early in the race had the No. 16 Ford playing catch-up all day.
"Yeah, I mean, I feel stupid," Biffle said. "I just had a bunch of rubber on the tires and just screwed up. I had a good car. I probably stood a chance at winning if I could have gotten (back) out front. But I just screwed up. That's all there is to it."
The spin was something Biffle hadn't expected and that took his completely by surprise.
"Yeah, obviously," he said. "The thing is, it caught me off-guard. Here’s what caught me off-guard—our tires don’t shed rubber anymore, they put off powder or dust. Well, this was the first race track where there’s marbles again—the old famous marbles. And I had it all over my tires, and when I made the first initial left, I just thought it was because the nose was up in the air because we were going so slow, and I kept in the gas a little bit. If I would’ve let off then, then I would’ve been okay. But, just gum on the tires, like bubblegum—all that stuff rolled up on the tires."
Biffle put on a furious charge after falling back to 30th place and was able to secure an 11th place finish, good enough to move him up to seventh in the Sprint Cup Series standings.
"I had a good car," Biffle said. "I probably stood a chance at winning if I could’ve gotten out front."
Biffle has a press conference scheduled this Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway where he will reprtedly announce a contract extension with Roush Fenway Racing, taking him off the free agent market.
